Off road riding is much more exciting than driving on even the fastest and smoothest roads, and double track trails are much more accessible than racetracks, and four wheel drive vehicles are likewise more accessible than a similar racecar. Not any vehicle is suited for 4 wheel tires and off road parts, but there are many to choose from both new and old. One of the most popular and widespread is of course the Jeep which is more of a description than a brand name. Off road wheels and tires are one of the most important parts of vehicular backcountry exploration.
The wrong tires can cause a lot of problems in the wilderness, getting stuck with slick wheels can ruin the best day and even be dangerous in many situations. While one spare is standard, what would happen if two wheels became damaged? The best way to prevent that is by having quality tires and rims with good tread and rim bead grip. Bead grip is important when a driver wants to lower the pressure of their tires for added traction in loose terrain. These wheels and rim combinations are meant for the greatest traction in certain situations. There are specialized tires for sand which are much different from tires made for mud or snow.
All terrain tires are great for the weekend warrior that still has to drive their rig to work every day as they have a smoother tread that gets good gas mileage yet still have good sized lugs for traction in many different types of conditions. They may not be able to rock crawl but they can get through some rough terrain and still pick up the groceries at the end of the day. They are designed to last longer and be quieter than off road tires.
Off road rims are different from regular street going rims in their durability as well as their design. They often have added bolts around the bead of the tire which keeps the tire sealed to the rim even when there is very low pressure. Most tires are kept pressurized simply by having the rim and bead seal with air pressure. When air pressure is lowered the tire can come off of the bead and instantly go flat requiring a little bit of work to get going again. Who carriers a tire pump into the wilderness anyway? When the rim is bolted to the tire bead the tire can run on much lower pressure without popping its seal.
Style is important, but a durable, heavy duty rim has style all its own. It doesn’t need any fancy graphics or stylish curves, just pure simple power with a part number stamped on the side. Bolts are easy to get to, and nothing would even think of bending or breaking in even the toughest terrain and highest speeds.
