Off road tires come in many different variations depending on the type of four wheeling that is preferred. All-purpose tires are good for driving on the road as well as off the road in many different conditions but they are not specialized enough to be used in more rigorous conditions.
Off road tires are often designed for specific conditions such as sand, mud or rocks. Sand tires are wide and have big paddle type treads that can move around a lot of sand without sinking. Mud tires are designed to sink to the bottom of mud pits for traction and are thin and tall with widely spaced treads.
Rock climbing off road tires are incredibly large to easily roll over the largest rocks and have tread going onto the sidewall to grip in even the most vertical and dangerous positions. These wheels are often run at low pressures to give them even more surface area which translates to traction on the rock.
