Why do people lower the pressure in their tires when four wheeling?
They do this because a tire with lower air pressure will be easier to bend and flex around rocks and terrain giving it more grip and surface area. The footprint of the tire is larger because there is less pressure keeping the tire rigid so it sags. On the road and for every driving this would be very bad because it increases wear on the tire and can harm the rims as well. Many four wheel drive specific wheels have reinforced rims because of this preference to lower air pressure drastically. These rims often include bead locks that bolt the bead of the tire to the rim which allows it to seal better so it can run on lower pressure without blowing the bead and losing the seal.
Where is a good place to four wheel drive?
The best place is Moab, Utah. It has incredibly warm weather in the summer and is widely recognized as the mecca of off-road riding. Bring your bikes, your jeep, plenty of water and food and a good tent. There are places to rent everything including rock climbing cars if desired and there are many places that are four wheeler or motorbike friendly and many more places that offer incredible hikes and views. It’s fun for everyone.
What is the difference between a body lift and a suspension lift kit?
The difference is what is being lifted. A suspension lift will give the vehicle more ground clearance but requires a lot of new parts and effort to install and may prematurely ruin the components and parts of the vehicle. It does allow for it to traverse more varied and difficult terrain, especially when coupled with larger off-road wheels and tires.
A body lift only raises the body off of the frame of the vehicle. Often this is done for solely cosmetic purposes as it is much cheaper and easier than a suspension lift. It is also done on mudders which need more clearance for the wheels and protection from water and mud. These can be done with a couple of hockey pucks, a drill, wrench, a jack to lift the body, and a bottle of jack for fun, though there are professional ways of doing this as well.
